During a live event from Facebook Inc, Zuckerberg and his team announced a number of things that will change the company forever. As Facebook transitions into a company set to take over the new “Metaverse” world, he announced a name change for the parent company of the app we all know and have used at one point. Facebook Inc, will now be known as Meta. The apps under the company, however, will all remain with the same names (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsUp).
It is clear that Meta intends to become the leader & key player in the metaverse, building all the infrastructure to create the new internet using VR & AR technologies.
This became clear during Facebook’s announcement, as they released new updates on their Oculus products and also gave a sneak peek about the future of VR/AR with Project Cambria.
Project Cambria is an unreleased VR/AR headset created and designed by Meta. It will be considered a high-end tech product that will most definitely cost you more than the average VR/AR headset currently available in the market.
Although it will be an expensive device, it will be capable of things currently not possible with existing headsets. For example, it includes new built-in sensors capable of recognizing your facial expressions and simultaneously displaying them through your virtual character. This will also allow the characters to keep eye contact to have a more immersed experience in a virtual reality environment.
Another feature that is promising and exciting is the recognition of real-world objects. This will allow for an immersive AR experience between the virtual world and the real world.
The new hardware will most likely be available for purchase to the public in late 2022 or early 2023 and will be compatible with the Quest platform.
